This is the love of God among us – pt1

What does sending His only Son to us say to us about God?

1 John 4:7-14

Our lead-in, verses of 1 John 4:7 and 8, are well known, recited, sung and beloved of Christians down through the centuries of the church. One of my first songs we learned in Sunday School as children was verses 7-8 set to a tune. They are beloved because they express so simply the profound and satisfying truth of the very nature of God as love, of the regenerating and indwelling ministry of God’s Spirit in the believer, and the call and expectation of spiritual and emotional growth as a new believer trods the same well-worn path that believers have walked in centuries past. There is no point along this well-worn path that one can’t see it clearly and when one falls off it, as we are prone to do, a return to it and forward progress is as simple as looking for it again, repenting of our inattention to its clear boundaries, and returning to our walk. Simple! It’s not complex.

As we enter this Christmas season, my hope and goal in preaching here is that we illumine that walkway, that we hold up the torch of the Word for one another so we can tread the Way of Christ with all the saints and together, as one, enjoy our God.
