The Christian and the Law of God. Pt. 3, Romans 5:12-17

Romans 5:12-17

We are having a fascinating and life-illuminating discussion about the Law of God. Last Sunday we gleaned the truth that God’s Law is God Himself, in His triune being. That is that even before it is expressed externally to His creatures, from eternity past God in His very subsistence is upright, holy, and true and that Law of God, that regulating divine principle, is inherent in the ever-living relationship of Father, Son and Spirit. God does not make up Law extrinsic to Himself. This fact, that God’s Law is God Himself is true without regard to the existence of the universe or God’s creatures in it. From that we can now properly step into this created world and explore the second aspect of God’s Law as it interacts with us as His creatures.

So let’s propose this second aspect in relation to us as this: The Law of God is God’s necessary, absolute and objective demand on his Moral Creatures, and it could not be otherwise. Necessary, because it proceeds from His Being and nature and could not be otherwise. That is, God cannot conceive of a moral universe other than the one that is.  God does not make up out of whole cloth a moral code for us. Absolute, because there is no higher moral standard, nor does it countenance any competitors. Objective, because it is knowable and communicable among God’s moral creatures.

Now we’ll have three more aspects to explore: The Law of God as Scripture, The Law of God as the Mosaic Covenant (how we often think of the term, “the Law”), and The Law of God as the Law of Christ.
So shall we dig in and grow in our knowledge of God and of ourselves??
